I’ve finally found some time to throw together a showreel using various bits and pieces of work – some of it’s old, some of it’s new, but it’s all created / modeled / rendered by me.

Despite watching it through many, many times on my pc before I hit the ‘Upload a video’ button, after I’d uploaded it I remembered a few things I’d have liked to put in it but completely forget – so expect an updated version of it some time soon. Probably.

Software: After Effects, 3D Studio Max, maybe a bit of Photoshop

An informational animation I did late last year – to go on the homepage of the products new website.

The original idea was just just to have a reasonably simple Flash animation explaining ‘how it works!’, but in the end they wanted something a little more polished.

However the deadline and the budget were still the same, so it’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s still a fun little piece.

A short 3D motion graphics piece I did for Brass in Leeds – 13 seconds of video that needed to bring to life some existing design elements from an offline marketing campaign.

The initial unravelling of the text was done in After Effects using masks and animated strokes, then the 3D ribbon animations were created and rendered in 3DSMax with the path deform modifier, and a good old bit of trial-and-error.

The idea was to see to what extent I could create a seemingly ‘detailed’ scene using just boxes, no real 3D modelling and really basic lighting.

Anyone who sheds a tear of joy for happy childhood memories any time they hear the phrase “Eye of Thundera, give me sight beyond sight!” should recognise the inspiration behind this.

80′s kids cartoons, I salute you.

Another little experiment that’s not meant to be anything in particular, but that might turn into something more exciting one day.

Take any old polygon, inset then extrude some of it’s faces, add some twist and then warp it’s vertices into a sphere. Then go crazy with the key frames and randomly animate the % of sphericalness (that’s probably not a word by the way), degree of twist and change the initial number of polygons on the base shape and this is the sort of animation you’ll probably get.

The music track is All To All by Broken Social Scene.

A quick entry to another Greyscale Gorilla Five Second Project. This time the subject was CMYK.

The blobs were animated with RealFlow and then rendered in 3D Studio Max with Vray’s ‘Fast SSS2′ material to get the waxy look.

A short motion graphics piece I did for SeeVue Digital in London to highlight the various routes MS’s online advertising takes.

The various assets were screen-cammed and positioned in space using 3D layers in After Effects with the obligatory corporate copy. Video Copilot’s Sure Target plugin was used to jump between the layers.

Sprinkle on a little wiggle() with some motion blur and depth of field and you’ve got yourself a nice little corporate video.

It would have been nice to sync it to the audio a little better and maybe drive some of the particles in the background with SoundKeys or something similar. Maybe next time…
